TCM Formulation Strategy: The chief herb, yi yi ren, leaches out dampness, especially in the middle and lower burners, through the urine. Ma huang, the deputy herb, disperses exterior-wind from the muscle layer. Another deputy herb, dang gui, nourishes blood, tonifies nutritive yin and helps expel the exterior-wind. The assistant herbs include gui zhi, shao yao, and bai zhu. The combination of gui zhi and shao yao enhances the ability of the protective qi and strengthens the nutritive qi, thus reinforcing the action of expelling the pathogenic influences. Bai zhu helps the chief ingredient leach out the dampness. Zhi gan cao, the envoy, tonifies the spleen and harmonizes the actions of the other herbs. So the main action of this formula is to disperse the swelling in the exterior and treat dry blood in the interior. Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dose is 7.5g/day orally in 3 divided doses before or between meals. The dosage may be adjusted according to the patient's age, body weight, and symptoms. |
