TCM Formulation Strategy:

The composition of this formula is the same as that of gui zhi tang, but there are different ratios of ingredients. The amount of shao yao in this formula is much higher than that in gui zhi tang. The chief herb, gui zhi, benefits the protective qi and tonifies the yang. The deputy, shao yao, strengthens the nutritive qi, softens the overactive liver and alleviates pain. The combination of these two herbs works together to control wood and nurture the earth, thereby stopping the pain associated with this condition. Sheng jiang and da zao benefit the spleen and stomach qi. The envoy, zhi gan cao, tonifies the spleen and harmonizes the actions of the other herbs. So the focus of this formula is to soften the liver and stop the pain due to interior cold in the greater yin stage.

Dosage and Administration:

For adults: 7.5g/day orally divided into 3 doses before or between meals. The dosage may be adjusted based on age, body weight and symptoms.
